Block Bonanza-Block Genius Series

First Saturday each month
One 15 minute demonstration
On the hour at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m.

Our ever popular Block Bonanza program begins a new series featuring the well-designed blocks presented in the new book, Block Genius, by Sue Voegtlin.  The basic fundamentals of the program remain the same.  Come to Abigayle’s the first Saturday of each month at 11:00 or 1:00.  You will see a demonstration of how to create the block.  Register for a mere $5.00 and purchase the book with a 20 % discount.  You will receive your choice of one of the two fabric color ways and a handout of Nancy’s piecing tips.  Come on the first Saturday for the next eleven months with your completed block from the prior month and get your demonstration, fabric and handout free of charge!  The fabric kit, handout and demonstration are only available on the first Saturday at 11:00 and 1:00.

Have to miss a session?  No problem!  Jus pay a $5.00 fee and continue with the series.  Fabric kits and hand-outs for missed blocks are not available.  However, because the patterns are in the book, you may create the missed block from the instructions in the book.  We will even help you select fabric to purchase.

At the end of the series Nancy will present a finishing kit to put the blocks together.  Throughout the program notions and rulers will be offered at discounts to make your piecing experience more successful.  With your commitment to attend the sessions and sew the blocks, you will have 12 beautiful blocks and improved piecing skills, and quite possibly new
friends from class!

Curved Piecing 1

Crazy Curves

Nancy Bryant

The only way to make foolproof curves is with Elisa's Backporch templates.  Choose a nice selection of colors (we love batiks) and off you go.  Use the rotary cutter around the templates, position an inside curve and an outside curve together and off you go.  Nancy had the husbands of quilters sewing this in the store while they waited for their sewing "experts" to shop.  The wives were in disbelief when the husbands showed their sewing skills - curves that is!  It is so easy and fun when you have a little help.  Join Nancy for this fun, fun class.

Curved Piecing 2

Double Wedding Ring

Nancy Bryant

This well-loved traditional quilt pattern seems to be a favorite among brides of all ages.  John Flynn has stream lined the piecing process with strip piecing techniques that eliminate the need to cut individual segments.  His acrylic templates ensure accuracy and allow the melons and centers to be placed in multiple layers to be cut at once.  Even novice quilters can successfully complete this once challenging quilt with John’s well illustrated instructions and Nancy’s patient guidance.

Paper Piecing 1

Beverly Morris

Basic paper piecing skills allow us to create unusual angles, shapes and perfect points with great accuracy. It is a fundamental skill every quilter needs to make many of the beautiful, contemporary pieces seen in magazines and quilt shows. Whether you strive for a Judy Niemeyer masterpiece or a simple house block as shown on our popular Quilted Village piece, this class is where you learn the basics. Bev will get you on the right track with this helpful class based on small, seasonal projects.  Soon, you too can enjoy the limitless potential paper piecing offers.

Paper Piecing 2

Bali Dragonfly

Learning how to put together sections of paper piecing to make a much larger design is the next step in your paper piecing skills.  This pattern has four of the same design, so you will be able to repeat your skills.  Your heart may flutter with appreciation when you finish your first dragonfly!

Paper Piecing 3

Judy Niemeyer Sewing Day

Beverly Morris

Judy Niemeyer’s extraordinary quilts are just too pretty to create alone.  We all need someone to turn to say “Oh my goodness, look how gorgeous this is!”  And, occasionally it helps to have someone there to help you get back on track if you lose your place.  If you have started a Judy Niemeyer project, or want to start one with a little help, this class is calling your name.  Let’s face it, if we get to sew all day and we have Bev’s creative expertise at the ready, that’s all the motivation we need!

T-Shirt Quilt

Give those cherished T-Shirts a new life by repurposing them into a soft and durable quilt. It is a terrific conversation piece for the college student and a fun way to take a piece of home to the dorm. Learn how to stabilize the knit fabric, cut the T-shirts into blocks and design a quilt unique to your set of shirts. The first week you will design the quilt, the second you will construct it. Don’t let your tees waste away in a drawer. They will be much more fun the second time around!

Fast Patchwork

Just Can't Cut It

Sometimes a fabric is just too pretty to cut. This simple pattern is made entirely from large shapes.  It guides you through combining accent fabrics with a large print, to make a modern looking quilt. Pattern includes yardages and cutting directions for several sizes.

Double Needle Details

Raising Chain

Nancy Bryant

One simple block is all it takes to create this elegant quilt. The “chain” is accented with Trapunto work achieved with a double needle. Learn some tips and tricks to super accurate piecing and pressing to ensure seams line up and blocks lie flat. The embellished tucked inner border makes an elegant frame for your accurate patchwork.

Hand Piecing

Hexies

Hexagons are actually challenging to piece by machine, but oh, so easy by hand!  The tips and tricks of hand sewing that we have picked up over the years are invaluable to a new hand piecer.  We have been told many times that just one of our tips was worth the price of the class!  Join us to see how we can help you become more successful in your hand piecing.

Crazy Quilting by Machine

Benartex Foundation Fabric

We love crazy quilts!  These quirky quilts captivate the eye with their unusual lines and decorative stitches.  It is fun to practice using different threads and adjusting the stitches to make a unique quilt.  Using your machine on this quilt style lets you learn the most from all of the different stitches on your machine and their different adjustments, to learning about all the different threads and needles.  It's a hoot!

Quilt Design Class - Graduates of this class will receive an Abigayle's enamel pin to celebrate their achievement.

Quick Cutter Quilts

Nancy Bryant and Beverly Morris

Are you ready to put your own creative touch into your quilting? This design class takes you into the thought process to create original quilts. The six week class explores the elements of design and color theory. You’ll learn how to calculate fabric yardage needed to create a quilt to the size needed, as well as how to incorporate specialty fabrics, plaids, stripes, and border prints into your one of a kind creation. Be prepared to sew every week because we will encourage and personally challenge you to sew along with us.  Fast techniques are demonstrated and used to get these quilts done!  Students are encouraged to bring a stash fabric they love, but haven’t been able to use and Nancy and Bev will help design around it. You will never be limited to using someone else’s ideas again.

Needleturn Hand Appliqué 1

Beverly Morris

If you want to hand appliqué, you will want to learn great technique in the basics of Needleturn.  The finest hand appliquéd quilts are usually done with this technique.  Stitching beautiful blocks with gentle curves and sharp, perfect corners is what it's all about with Needleturn.  Using your needle, thread and scissors to give the most realistic look in your finished appliqué.  Join Bev to get started on a lifelong journey with fabric, needle and thread.

Needleturn Hand Appliqué 2

Hawaiian BOM

Beverly Morris

This style of needleturn appliqué was the first real quilt I remember.  It was pictured in a magazine ad, draped across a hammock on a beach between palm trees.  It was beautiful!  It has been my favorite style ever since.  The graceful lines, curved sides, sharp points and the snowflake style medallion; it has all the elements to learn great needleturn applique.  I designed this quilt, using elements of the islands to reinforce the Hawaiian theme.  I hope you will join me monthly and make your Hawaiian Quilt dreams come true!

Needleturn Hand Appliqué 3

Baltimore Album Techniques

Beverly Morris

Techniques for Baltimore Album style quilts.  The history is part of the story when stitching these quilts, so we will discuss the origins, the adaptations and the techniques for different blocks.  Can you tell we just love these quilts?  This time honored needle skill will create family heirloom quilts for generations to come.  Start making your quilt memories today.

Blanket Stitch Machine Appliqué

Gone to the Dogs

Don't you just love these adorable faces?  This quilt is a smart design because it shows you how to make the top without the dogs, layer, quilt it and bind it.  Then you add the applique to the finished quilt.  The stitching around the dog faces become the quilting in each of the squares!  We hope that you too will experience the "Ah Ha" moment!  This quilt is also available as a laser cut kit - all the cutting and fusing done for you!

Kits are available at Abigayles - standard and laser cut.

Edge Coloring Appliqué

In Full Bloom

This stunning quilt is perfect for beginners and experts alike.  The appliqué is created without fusible web, so the resulting quilt is not stiff as one might expect when employing other common techniques.  The beautiful fabric is from Island Batik and the thread kit has been especially designed for it by Aurifil.  Edge Coloring is simply stitching over the fabric edges with thread.  The project is just pure fun.  It literally reminds me of the days with my crayons and coloring books.  Trace designs, cut out, glue in place and color the edges with thread. The technique can be done with feed dogs up, using the reverse function, or free motion. Both techniques will be taught in class.  The technique is simple and Nancy will make it fun!

Kits are available at Abigayles.

Blanket Stitch Machine Appliqué

You too can make this heirloom quality quilt and become an expert on blanket stitch applique in the process!

Blind Hem Machine Appliqué

Dinoland

Often the speed and durability of machine work is desirable but you want the look of handwork.  You may be surprised to know that most sewing machines have the perfect stitch to achieve these goals.  Forget raw edges and often stiff fusible web techniques.   Nancy will show you how to create beautiful turned edge appliqués with soft fusible interfacing.  The appliqués are then secured with the blind hem stitch on the sewing machine, especially set with short stitch length and width to invisibly, but securely hold the edges.  Oh, why didn’t we do this sooner?!  So much fun!

Kits are available at Abigayles

On Point Setting with Mitered Borders

Sugar Sands

So, you've been quilting for a while now and you probably have some orphan blocks laying around.  Why not put them into a great setting and expand your skill base?  You will need 12 - 12" blocks (or make our blocks as seen in the sample) before coming to class.  We will show you how to set those blocks in a graceful on point setting and add mitered borders which accentuate the diagonal line of the blocks.

Basic Horizontal Borders

Easy Panel Quilt

In response to the oft posed question, “Why do you cut the fabric up just to spend hours sewing it back together?” Sometimes a fabric is pretty enough right off the bolt! So, why not just add a couple borders and enjoy it?  The result is a quickie quilt perfect for a child, quick lap quilt for a sick friend, or as Nancy’s dog, Betty suggests, a beloved pet.  Practically speaking, it is also the ideal project to learn borders, bindings and practice hand or machine quilting. Trust us, you will find reasons to make this one more than once.  Especially when you see all the new fabrics in the store!

Great class for the beginner or to refresh your border skills.

Easy Quilting - Any Panel

Any delightful panel is a true invitation to practice machine quilting skills. We will guide you through layering, marking and both free motion and feed dog controlled quilting techniques. We’ll even include a demonstration on how to bind a quilt with a special ruler that makes finishing the ends easy and professional looking.

Chenille Throw

This soft, drapery throw is perfect to snuggle around your shoulders or warm your lap on the couch. It is rough and tumbles enough to toss in the car for extra warm on chilly days. The more it is used the softer it gets! We love to make them with our beautiful woven plaids. The new chenille rotary cutter makes it easy enough for everyone to make.

This would make a superior wheelchair quilt - drapes beautifully, and just the right size!

Serger Quilting

Metro Blues

The only challenging part of this project is deciding which set of beautiful fabric from which to make it!  The strips are layered with batting then quickly joined with the serger.  The serger trims the fabric, overcasts the edges and sews a double seam with two needles to produce a sturdy quilt to withstand toddlers, teens, pets and picnics. The edge can them be completed with the serger and a decorative thread or with a traditional binding.  This quilt is finished in an afternoon!

Great class for the serger beginner or to refresh your serger skills.
