From Nancy’s Sewing Room –
Bernina has always made excellent, easy to use, reliable sergers. So, when the new L850 serger was presented at the Bernina University and I was excited to give it a try. My first impression was that the engineers listened to the consumers and made the changes large and small to create a serger that is both reliable and user friendly.
The machine rests solidly on the table. It has generous space to the right of the needle and LED lighting. The slide on table provides ample support for large projects and the free arm allows easy access to sleeves and small openings. The thread catcher is easy to attach and remove. The manual thread cutter is handy and will double as a means of holding the thread tail out of the way as a new seam is created. The knife is accessible from the outside of the machine to make endings simple and tidy. The Needle threader makes threading the needles simple. The needles can be pushed to the side to easily place the looper threads under the foot. The front cover doubles as accessory storage and includes a place to retain extra needles. This is especially handy when using 3 thread stitches.
All this before we even get to the main event, air threading! The loopers are easily threaded with the flip of a switch and a tap of the foot control. Simply hold the thread over the port and it is easily pulled through the system! Even soft fluffy wooly nylon feed easily into the thread path. All my doubts vanished. My thoughts of I already have a good serger, turned into I must own this machine!
